Blossoming Cherry Branch
This sculpture, carved from African wild boar tusk (12 cm in length), is more than just a branch; it is a traditional Japanese bouquet that captures the very essence of Hanami (cherry blossom viewing).
On the gracefully curved cherry branch—a symbol of beauty, renewal, and, crucially, the transience of life—tender blossoms unfold, each rendered with incredible detail. The material, stained with walnut ink, gives the piece a natural, warm hue, as if the branch were freshly picked.
This work embodies profound Japanese philosophy: the fleeting nature of the sakura reflects the transience of beauty, encounters, and love. It serves as a potent reminder of the preciousness of every moment.
The piece is lent special value and depth by an ancient haiku intricately engraved in Japanese using a burning needle:
«Samazama no… / Myriads of things past / Koto omoidasu… / Are brought to my mind — / Sakura kana… / These cherry blossoms!»
This haiku, filled with nostalgia and acceptance of the inevitable flow of time, was carefully selected with the assistance of Tatiana Nikolova and Tomoko Watanabe.
”Blossoming Cherry Branch” is not merely a sculpture, but poetry materialized, reminding us of the cherished moments that remain in our hearts.
