This miniature sculpture is created from a cachalot tooth that had a unique feature: it consisted of two layers—white and apricot. The hardness of the material allowed for the carving of the smallest details, such as the pages in the book and even the veins on his hands.
The monumental style of the great Russian artist Mikhail Vrubel served as the inspiration for this work. Just as in his “faceted” and expressive paintings, every detail in this sculpture carries an inner spiritual force. This is not just a figure, but an embodiment of the deep emotion characteristic of Vrubel’s works, who sought to express the soul, not just the form.
The work is done in the spirit of Vrubel’s art, conveying his pursuit of mystical and spiritual beauty.
The sculpture is made from a cachalot tooth, 12.6 cm tall.
2002, USA, private collection.
