This netsuke embodies the lightness and transience of the Japanese summer. This work was featured on the cover of the prestigious International Netsuke Society Journal (Volume 28, No. 1, Spring 2008).
The composition captures the full dynamism of the natural world:
Dragonfly (Tombo): Symbolizes courage, victory, and forward aspiration.
Grasshopper (Kirigisu): A symbol of happiness, good luck, and longevity.
The effect of airiness is achieved through the Ryūsa openwork, which allows light to penetrate freely through the intertwined stems and wings. The four eyes of the insects, inlaid with amber, add a vivid sparkle to the piece.
This netsuke is a frozen moment of harmony.
Materials: Mammoth tusk, amber inlay.
Size: 2 inches across, ½ inch thick.
