This sculpture, carved from ivory, is a frozen moment of fierce combat and a tribute to the great Japanese artist Hokusai. The work is inspired by his classic, dynamic design, conveying all the energy and tension of the fight.
In Japan, the Rooster (Tori) symbolizes strength, honor, and pride, and is also the herald of dawn. The depiction of two fighting roosters reflects the duality of the world: eternal conflict, rivalry, and untamed vitality.
The netsuke is distinguished by its filigree detailing of the plumage and combs. The birds’ bodies are toned with the natural dye Yashabushi, which gives the material a warm, antique hue. The amber and gold inlaid eyes add a predatory liveliness to their gaze.
”Fighting Bantams” is more than just a scene; it is a powerful embodiment of energy, honor, and craftsmanship, inspired by classic Japanese aesthetics.
