Killer whale
This netsuke, carved from ivory, embodies the might and mystical grandeur of the ocean. The Killer Whale, or Shachi (鯱) in Japan, is not merely a predator but a powerful spirit of protection and a talisman traditionally believed to summon rain and guard against fire, often seen crowning the roofs of castles.
The work looks amazing for its finish, symbolizing the water element and the starry night.
The light areas of the ivory contrast sharply with the deep, mirror-like black obtained using Roiro-Urushi lacquer.
It’s like the stardust effect. The animal’s body is studded with shimmering particles: Hiramefu (silver flakes) and Nashiji-Urushi lacquer create the deepth, as if the whale is leaping from the depths of a mystical, nocturnal ocean.
The amber eyes add a predatory insight and wisdom to its gaze.
This netsuke is a true talisman, conveying wishes for strength, protection, and the spirit of Ocean Freedom, fused with the ancient Japanese tradition of protective amulets.
Length 7 cm. Carved from ivory, finished with Roiro-Urushi and Nashiji-Urushi lacquers, inlaid with Hiramefu silver flakes, eyes inlaid with amber.
