This dynamic sculpture, carved from a piece of mammoth tusk, captures the climactic moment of a Sumo match—Japan’s most ancient martial art. At a height of 9.1 cm, the netsuke conveys the immense tension and raw power of the wrestlers.
The work is distinguished by its meticulous detail and use of traditional techniques: the wrestlers’ bodies are delicately tinted with a mixed natural dye (including kuchinashi, turmeric, and tea). The hair is rendered with Rose Urushi lacquer, while the ceremonial mawashi belt is adorned with lacquers and shimmering Nashiji flakes (gold and silver). Notably, the intricate tattoos on the wrestlers’ shoulders and backs were created using the traditional hot needle method.
”Sumo Wrestlers” is an ode to physical strength, honour, and Japanese tradition. It is part of the prestigious LUB collection.
