“Two Sides of Power” Inrō-Cigarette Case
The “Two Sides of Power” Inrō-Cigarette Case
This inrō, created from start to finish in traditional Japanese technique, is a fascinating experiment that bridges classic Edo art with modern functionality. Historically, inrō were used to carry medicine and personal seals, serving as a prominent indicator of the owner’s status and taste. This piece resurrects that tradition for the 21st century: it was commissioned by a collector for use as an elegant cigarette case.
Like its historical ancestors, this object is not merely a utilitarian accessory but a personal talisman, telling a profound story about the two faces of power.
Side 1: The Dragon (Divine Power)
One side depicts a mighty Dragon (Ryū) soaring above a watery expanse against a backdrop of mountains. This is the ultimate symbol of cosmic power, wisdom, and creative energy. As the master of the elements, it represents untamed, divine might, ambition, and the ability to influence the world. This is the “outer” face, declaring status and grandeur.
Side 2: The Cormorant Fisherman (Human Power)
On the reverse side is an ukai fisherman, practicing the ancient art of fishing with cormorants, more than 1300 years. In contrast to the divine Dragon, the fisherman is a symbol of human mastery, patience, and a deep understanding of nature. He does not command the elements, but lives in harmony with them, using refined skill and experience to achieve his goal. This is the “inner” face, speaking to the owner’s personal wisdom and craft.
The Netsuke-Manju: The Unifying Goal
The ensemble is completed by a netsuke-manju depicting a Carp and Lotus. This image brilliantly unifies both sides of the inrō.
The Carp is the very goal toward which both heroes strive:
According to legend, it is the Carp that, by overcoming a waterfall, becomes a Dragon.
At the same time, the Carp is the ultimate prize and goal of the Fisherman.
Thus, the netsuke symbolizes the “Source” and the “Goal”—the very aspiration for success that is achieved through both divine inspiration (the Dragon) and diligent human mastery (the Fisherman).
The owner of this inrō carries not just a cigarette case, but an entire philosophy: true success is the union of great ambition and refined skill.
