In this incredibly laborious and mesmerizing work, “Yuki-onna” is woven entirely from dots. It is a surreal interpretation of the Japanese mythological character. Thousands of touches from a steel nib with black ink create not only the delicate visage but also every element surrounding it—from the intricate traditional Japanese hairstyle to the twisted cords and tassels.
Pointillism becomes more than just a technique; it is a metaphor: a myriad of particles, like a ceaseless snowfall, creates the entire image from countless snowflakes and ice dust. This technique perfectly conveys the ephemeral and frosty nature of the Snow Woman.
What appears from a distance to be a sharp contour of a cord or a strand of hair reveals itself upon closer inspection as a virtuosic cluster of dots. This creates a unique visual tension: an image built on emptiness and transience possesses an incredible power and a hypnotic, piercing gaze.
